    The basics

Why your title and meta description decide the click

Your title tag and meta description are your advert on Google. Ranking gets you seen; the snippet decides whether the searcher picks you or the result next to you.

The title is also one of the clearest signals of what a page is about. The meta description doesn't directly affect rankings, but a sharp one can lift click-through rate (CTR), and more clicks from the same ranking means more traffic for free. A Google SERP preview tool lets you check both before you publish, so nothing important gets cut off.

    How we measure it
Google truncates by pixels, not characters
Titles: desktop titles show roughly 600px of text at 20px Arial before "…". A title full of wide letters (W, M) gets cut sooner than one with narrow letters (i, l, t).
Descriptions: we use about 920px on desktop and 680px on mobile. These are approximations; Google doesn't publish exact limits and may rewrite either line.
    How to write them

Title and description formulas that work

Start from a proven pattern, then make it specific to your page. Swap the brackets for your own details.

    What the meter colours mean

The preview follows the device you pick. Check both, because more searches happen on phones for many businesses and mobile gives descriptions less room.

Red: truncatedText is wider than the likely limit and will probably be cut with "…". Trim or move key words forward.
Amber: shortWell under the limit. That's not wrong, but you may be missing a benefit, location or call to action.
Green: good fitFits the likely display width with enough substance to be useful.
RewrittenGoogle sometimes replaces your text with its own. A clear, accurate title that matches the page makes this less likely.
    Avoid these

Common title and meta description mistakes

Most weak snippets come from the same handful of habits. All of them are quick to fix.

Duplicate titles across pages. When many pages share one title, Google struggles to tell them apart and searchers can't either. Every page needs its own.

Front-loading the brand. "Brand | Home" tells nobody anything. Lead with what the page offers and put your brand at the end, unless your brand is what people search for.

Keyword stuffing. "Plumber, Plumbers, Best Plumber, Cheap Plumber" looks spammy and invites a rewrite. Use the keyword once, naturally.

Descriptions that don't match the page. Promising something the page doesn't deliver leads to quick bounces and makes Google more likely to ignore your description.

Leaving it blank. With no meta description, Google picks a snippet for you. It might be a cookie notice or a random sentence.

    Expert playbook

6 tips for snippets that earn clicks

What our SEO specialists do when a page ranks well but doesn't get the clicks it should.

    Match search intent

Look at what already ranks. If results are guides, a sales-heavy title will struggle. Give searchers the type of page they expect.

    Lead with the important words

Put the keyword and main benefit in the first half of the title so they survive truncation on any screen.

    Be specific

Numbers, timeframes, locations and concrete outcomes ("in 60 minutes", "free UK delivery") stand out against vague claims.

End with a call to action

Tell people what happens next: book, compare, download, get a quote. It turns a summary into a reason to click.

    Test with Search Console

Find pages with high impressions and low CTR, rewrite the snippet, then compare CTR over the following weeks.

    Stay honest

Clickbait may win a click but loses the visitor. Promise exactly what the page delivers and you'll keep both.

    FAQs

Google SERP Preview Tool: common questions

Still unsure what your results mean? Our team will walk you through them for free.

    Ask a specialist
How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts desktop titles at roughly 600 pixels, which is often around 50–60 characters, but it depends on the letters you use. Measure pixel width with a SERP preview tool rather than counting characters, and keep the key words at the start.

How long should a meta description be?

There is no fixed limit, and Google adjusts snippet length to the search. As a working guide, this tool uses about 920 pixels on desktop and 680 pixels on mobile. Put your main message and call to action early so it survives a shorter cut.

Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?

Google rewrites snippets when it thinks another piece of text better matches the search, or when yours is missing, stuffed with keywords, too long or doesn't match the page. Clear, accurate and page-specific tags make rewrites less likely.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. Google has said meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. They matter because they influence whether people click your result, and more clicks means more traffic from the same position.

Is this SERP preview exactly what Google will show?

It's a close approximation. We measure your text in pixels using the fonts Google uses for results, but the real display varies by device, browser, search features and whether Google rewrites your text. Use it to catch truncation and weak copy before publishing.
