What is CTR, and why it matters
Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who saw your ad, email or search listing and then clicked it. It is the clearest signal of whether your message is relevant and appealing to the people seeing it.
A high CTR sends more visitors for the same reach. On search platforms it can also feed into ad quality measures, which affect where you show and what you pay per click. A low CTR usually means the wrong audience, the wrong message, or both.
One metric, four very different channels
The formula is always the same, but what counts as an "impression" changes. Only compare CTRs within the same channel.
Search ads
Impressions are times your ad appeared for a search. Intent is high, so CTR is a strong measure of how well your ad matches the query.
Display & social ads
People are browsing, not searching, so CTR is naturally lower. Here it tells you whether the creative stops the scroll.
Email campaigns
Email CTR is usually clicks ÷ emails delivered. Some teams use click-to-open rate (clicks ÷ opens) instead, so check which one you are comparing.
Organic search (SERP)
Search Console reports clicks and impressions for your pages. CTR shows how compelling your title and description are at a given position.
Buttons & on-site CTAs
Clicks on a banner or button ÷ times it was viewed. Useful for testing homepage offers, pop-ups and internal promotions.
Video & shopping ads
The same idea applies: clicks through to your site ÷ times the ad was shown. Compare against earlier campaigns in the same format.
What is a good CTR?
There is no universal "good" CTR. It changes with platform, ad position, device, industry and whether people are searching for you by name. The most reliable yardstick is your own history. Add your usual CTR to the calculator and judge the change:
Remember: CTR measures interest, not results. A high CTR with a low conversion rate means you are attracting clicks that don't buy. Always read CTR next to conversion rate and cost per acquisition.
6 proven ways to raise your CTR
These are the levers our paid media and SEO specialists pull first when clicks are too low.
Write sharper ad copy
Lead with the benefit, include the searcher's words and give a clear reason to click now: a price, a guarantee, a deadline.
Use every extension and asset
Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, images and prices make your ad bigger and more useful, which usually earns more clicks.
Match search intent
Split keywords into tight groups so each ad speaks directly to the query. Add negative keywords to stop showing for the wrong searches.
Rewrite titles & meta descriptions
For organic listings, put the main keyword early, keep titles short enough to display fully and sell the click in the description.
Refine your audience
On display and social, exclude people who will never be interested and build lookalike or intent-based audiences from your best customers.
Test one change at a time
Run A vs B tests with a single difference, wait for enough data, then keep the winner. Use the comparison tool above to check the result.
How CTR fits with your other ad metrics
| CTR | Conversion rate | CPC | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Does the ad earn attention? | Does the click turn into a lead or sale? | What does each visit cost? |
| Formula | Clicks ÷ impressions | Conversions ÷ clicks | Cost ÷ clicks |
| Mostly driven by | Ad copy, creative, targeting, position | Landing page, offer, audience fit | Competition, ad quality, bidding |
| Watch out for | Clickbait that doesn't convert | Small sample sizes | Cheap clicks from the wrong people |

Still unsure what your results mean? Our team will walk you through them for free.
Ask a specialistHow do you calculate CTR?
Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. For example, 1,140 clicks from 30,000 impressions is 1,140 ÷ 30,000 × 100 = a 3.8% click-through rate.
What is a good click-through rate?
It depends heavily on the channel, ad position, device and industry. Search ads usually earn a higher CTR than display ads because people are actively looking. The most useful benchmark is your own past performance for the same channel and campaign type.
How do I compare the CTR of two ads?
Use the A vs B section of this CTR calculator. It shows each CTR, the relative lift of B over A and a confidence figure from a standard two-proportion test, so you can tell a real winner from random noise.
Does a higher CTR always mean better results?
No. CTR measures interest, not sales. If CTR rises but conversion rate falls, you may be attracting the wrong people. Judge CTR alongside conversion rate, cost per acquisition and ROAS.
What is the difference between email CTR and click-to-open rate?
Email CTR is usually clicks divided by emails delivered. Click-to-open rate is clicks divided by opens. Click-to-open rate is higher and tells you how good the email content is, while CTR reflects the whole send, including the subject line.
