What is conversion rate, and why it matters
Conversion rate (CVR) is the share of people who take the action you want: buy, book, call, sign up. It is the link between the traffic you pay for and the revenue you actually get.
It is also a multiplier. Doubling your conversion rate has the same effect on sales as doubling your traffic, but you don't pay the ad platform for it. That is why this conversion rate calculator also shows what a lift is worth in extra conversions and revenue.
Macro vs micro conversions
Track both. Macro conversions pay the bills; micro conversions show you where people drop off on the way.
| Macro conversions | Micro conversions | |
|---|---|---|
| What they are | The main goal of the page or site | Smaller steps that lead toward it |
| Examples | Purchase, quote request, booked call, paid sign-up | Add to cart, start checkout, pricing page view, newsletter sign-up, video play |
| Use them to | Judge revenue, ROAS and campaign success | Find the leaks in your funnel and test fixes faster |
| Watch out for | Low volume makes small changes noisy | Don't optimise ads for micro goals that never turn into sales |
Get a conversion rate you can trust in 4 steps
Define one conversion
Pick the action that matters for this page or campaign. Mixing sales and newsletter sign-ups hides what is really happening.
Choose the denominator
Visitors (users), sessions or ad clicks each give a different rate. Pick one and keep it the same every time you compare.
Match the date range
Use the same period for traffic and conversions, ideally 30 days or more, and allow for sales that close days after the click.
Check the tracking
Submit a test order or lead. Duplicate tags, missing thank-you pages and blocked cookies all distort CVR.
What is a good conversion rate?
It depends on your industry, price point, offer and, above all, where the traffic comes from. Branded search and email visitors convert very differently from cold social traffic. Rather than chase someone else's average, judge your rate like this:
Tip: a higher conversion rate isn't always better if it comes from cheaper, lower-value conversions. Watch revenue per visitor alongside CVR.
6 CRO tips to raise your conversion rate
Where our conversion rate optimisation team starts on almost every site.
Match the message
The headline should echo the ad or search that brought people in. A mismatch makes visitors bounce in seconds.
Make it fast
Slow pages lose visitors before they see your offer. Compress images, cut heavy scripts and test on a real phone.
Cut form friction
Ask only for what you need now. Every extra field, forced account or surprise cost is a reason to leave.
Show proof near the CTA
Reviews, guarantees, client logos and clear pricing reduce risk right where the decision is made.
One clear next step
A single, specific call to action ("Get my free quote") beats a page full of competing buttons and links.
Watch real sessions
Heatmaps, session recordings and quick user tests show you where people hesitate. Fix those spots first.
Prove the lift before you bank it
The "value of a lift" panel shows what an improvement could be worth. An A/B test tells you whether a change actually delivers it.
Test one meaningful change at a time, split traffic randomly, and decide your sample size and success metric before you start. Run the test for full weeks so weekday and weekend behaviour both count, and don't stop the moment one version pulls ahead: early leads often disappear. Low-traffic sites can still improve by fixing obvious problems found in recordings and user feedback, then checking the trend over a longer period.

Still unsure what your results mean? Our team will walk you through them for free.
Ask a specialistHow do you calculate conversion rate?
Divide conversions by visitors (or sessions or clicks) and multiply by 100. For example, 425 conversions from 12,500 visitors is a 3.4% conversion rate.
What is a good conversion rate?
There is no universal number. Conversion rates vary widely by industry, price, offer and traffic source. The most useful benchmark is your own: compare channels, devices and past periods, and check that cost per click divided by conversion rate stays below the value of a conversion.
Should I use visitors, sessions or clicks?
Any of them works if you stay consistent. Visitors (users) shows how many people convert, sessions counts each visit, and clicks is common for ad campaigns. Session-based rates are usually lower than user-based rates because one person can visit several times.
What is the difference between macro and micro conversions?
A macro conversion is the main goal, such as a purchase or quote request. Micro conversions are smaller steps toward it, like adding to cart or viewing pricing. Tracking both shows where people drop out of your funnel.
How much is a higher conversion rate worth?
Multiply your traffic by the increase in conversion rate, then by the value of a conversion. Use the "What would a lift be worth?" slider above to see extra conversions and revenue per month and per year.
