The basics

What is CPA, and why it matters

Cost per acquisition (CPA) is the average amount you spend on advertising to win one conversion: a sale, a lead, a booking or a sign-up. It connects ad spend directly to the results your business actually cares about.

A CPA only means something next to what that conversion is worth. That is why this calculator also finds your max CPA, the most you can pay before a conversion stops being profitable, from either the first order or the customer's lifetime value.

The formulas
CPA = Ad spend ÷ Conversions
Example: $6,000 in ad spend brings 150 sales. $6,000 ÷ 150 = $40 CPA.
Max CPA = Customer value × Profit margin
A $150 order at a 40% margin: $150 × 0.40 = $60. Using a $450 lifetime value instead: $180.

What counts as an acquisition?

An acquisition is whatever action you pay ads to drive. Define it clearly, track it consistently, and never mix different actions in one CPA.

A sale

For ecommerce, a completed purchase. Pair CPA with order value so a cheap sale of a low-value item doesn't look like a win.

A qualified lead

A form fill, call or quote request. Where you can, measure CPA on leads your sales team accepts, not every submission.

A sign-up or trial

For apps and SaaS, a free trial or account. Track how many convert to paid so you know the true cost of a customer.

What is a good CPA?

CPA varies enormously by industry, offer and channel, so ignore generic averages. A good CPA is one that sits below your own max CPA, with room left for profit:

Over targetMore than 20% above your limit. Each conversion loses money. Fix before you scale.
Slightly overUp to 20% above. Often fixable with bidding, negatives and landing page tweaks.
On targetWithin your limit. Profitable, but test budget increases in small steps.
Well under target20% or more below your limit. A strong case for more budget and wider reach.

Using lifetime value lets you pay more to win a customer who buys again. Only do this if you trust your repeat-purchase data and can afford the wait for payback.

Expert playbook

6 proven ways to lower your CPA

CPA is CPC ÷ conversion rate, so every fix either cheapens the click or makes more clicks convert.

Improve the landing page

Match the page to the ad, cut form fields, speed it up and make the next step obvious. Higher conversion rate lowers CPA directly.

Cut wasted spend

Pause keywords, placements and audiences that spend without converting, and add negative keywords every week.

Fix conversion tracking

Missing or duplicate conversions distort CPA and confuse smart bidding. Audit your tags before changing anything else.

Use target CPA bidding

Once a campaign has steady conversion volume, let the platform bid toward your target and adjust it gradually.

Remarket to warm visitors

People who already know you tend to convert more cheaply. Build audiences from site visitors, cart abandoners and past buyers.

Sharpen the offer

A clearer guarantee, free trial or stronger incentive can lift conversion rate more than any bid change.

CPA Calculator: common questions

Still unsure what your results mean? Our team will walk you through them for free.

Ask a specialist
How do you calculate CPA?

Divide your total ad spend by the number of conversions. For example, $6,000 in spend that produced 150 sales is $6,000 ÷ 150 = a $40 cost per acquisition.

How do I set a target CPA?

Multiply what a conversion is worth by your profit margin to get your break-even (max) CPA. A $150 order at a 40% margin gives $60. Set your target below that so each conversion leaves profit, or use customer lifetime value if customers reliably buy again.

What is a good CPA?

It varies widely by industry, offer and channel. A good CPA is one comfortably below your own max CPA. Judge it against your margins and lifetime value, not a generic average.

What is the difference between CPA and CAC?

CPA usually covers ad spend for a specific campaign and can count any action, such as leads or sign-ups. CAC (customer acquisition cost) includes all sales and marketing costs and counts only new paying customers.

Why is my CPA rising?

Common causes are rising click costs, a falling conversion rate, ad fatigue, broken tracking or scaling budget into less efficient audiences. Check tracking first, then CPC and conversion rate to see which moved.
