The basics

What is ROAS, and why it matters

Return on ad spend (ROAS) tells you how much revenue your advertising generates for every dollar you put in. It is the single fastest way to see whether a Google Ads, Meta Ads or shopping campaign is pulling its weight.

A ROAS of 4x means $4 in revenue for every $1 of ad spend. But revenue isn't profit. That is why this calculator also shows your break-even ROAS: the minimum return you need, based on your margins, before ads start making you money.

The formula
ROAS = Revenue from ads ÷ Ad spend
Example: you spend $5,000 on Google Ads and they generate $21,000 in sales. $21,000 ÷ $5,000 = 4.2x ROAS (or 420%).
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ Profit margin
With a 40% margin: 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5x. Anything above 2.5x is profit. Anything below loses money.
How to use it

Get an accurate ROAS in 4 steps

Pick a date range

Use the same period for spend and revenue, ideally 30 days or more, to smooth out daily swings.

Enter total ad spend

Use what you paid the ad platform. Add agency or creative fees too if you want a true cost view.

Enter ad revenue

Use revenue attributed to those ads in your ad platform or analytics, not total store sales.

Add your margin

Your gross profit margin unlocks break-even ROAS and profit after ad spend.

What is a good ROAS?

There is no single "good" number. A 3x ROAS can be excellent for a high-margin service and a loss for a low-margin retailer. Judge ROAS against your own break-even point:

Below 1xYou earn back less than you spend on ads. Pause or rebuild the campaign.
1x to break-evenRevenue covers ad spend but not product and running costs. Optimise before scaling.
Above break-evenEach sale is profitable after ad costs. Test careful budget increases.
Well above break-evenStrong performance. Scale spend and watch that ROAS holds as you grow.

Tip: new-customer campaigns often run at a lower ROAS than remarketing. Look at customer lifetime value too, not just the first sale.

Expert playbook

6 proven ways to improve your ROAS

These are the first things our paid media specialists check in every account audit.

Tighten targeting

Cut placements, audiences and search terms that spend without converting. Add negative keywords weekly.

Fix the landing page

A faster, clearer page lifts conversion rate, and conversion rate multiplies straight into ROAS.

Track conversions properly

Broken or duplicate tracking makes ROAS look better or worse than it is. Audit tags and value tracking first.

Bid on value, not clicks

Value-based bidding and product-level budgets push spend toward your most profitable sales.

Grow order value

Bundles, upsells and free-shipping thresholds raise revenue per sale without raising ad costs.

Refresh creative

Ad fatigue quietly drags performance down. Rotate new headlines, images and videos every few weeks.

ROAS Calculator: common questions

Still unsure what your results mean? Our team will walk you through them for free.

Ask a specialist
How do you calculate ROAS?

Divide the revenue generated by your ads by what you spent on those ads. For example, $21,000 in revenue from $5,000 in ad spend is a ROAS of 4.2x, or 420%.

What is a good ROAS?

It depends on your profit margin. Your break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ your margin, so a business with a 40% margin needs at least 2.5x to cover ad costs. A "good" ROAS is comfortably above your own break-even point.

What is break-even ROAS?

It is the ROAS at which your ad spend exactly equals the gross profit the ads generate. Below it, ads lose money. Above it, each sale is profitable after ad costs.

What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?

ROAS only compares revenue with ad spend. ROI compares profit with every cost involved, including products, staff and fees. Use ROAS to optimise campaigns and ROI to judge the business case.

Why is my ROAS different in Google Ads and my analytics?

Each platform uses its own attribution model and conversion window, and may count view-through or cross-device conversions differently. Pick one source of truth and compare like with like.
