What is CPM, and why it matters
CPM stands for cost per mille: the price you pay for 1,000 impressions of your ad. It is the standard way display, video, social, connected TV and many programmatic buys are priced, and the core metric for awareness campaigns.
Because CPM pays for visibility rather than action, it is ideal when the goal is reach: launching a brand, filling a remarketing pool or staying top of mind. Publishers use the same formula as eCPM (effective CPM) to compare earnings across ad formats.
CPM vs CPC vs CPA: what are you paying for?
Each model shifts risk between you and the platform. Pick the one that matches what you actually want from the campaign.
| CPM | CPC | CPA | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Every 1,000 impressions | Each click | Each conversion |
| Formula | Cost ÷ impressions × 1,000 | Cost ÷ clicks | Cost ÷ conversions |
| Best for | Awareness, reach, video, remarketing pools | Traffic and search campaigns | Lead generation and sales |
| Who carries the risk | You: low CTR still costs the same | Shared: you pay only for visits | Mostly the platform or partner |
| What to watch | Viewability, frequency, CTR | Conversion rate, click quality | Conversion quality, tracking |
When should you buy on CPM?
CPMs vary widely by platform, placement, audience, location and time of year, so compare against your own past campaigns rather than a generic figure. Use the rule of thumb below to choose your pricing model:
Formula check: equivalent CPM = CPC × CTR × 1,000. A $1.50 CPC at a 0.6% CTR equals a $9.00 CPM.
6 ways to get more from every CPM
A low CPM only matters if the impressions reach real, relevant people. These are the checks our media buyers make first.
Tighten your audience
Broad audiences are cheap per impression but waste reach. Layer interests, lookalikes and exclusions so every 1,000 views counts.
Buy viewable impressions
An impression nobody could see is wasted money. Favour placements and bidding options that optimise for viewability.
Cap frequency
Showing the same person an ad too many times raises cost and annoys them. Set sensible frequency caps per week.
Refresh creative often
Fresh creative keeps engagement up. On many platforms, stronger engagement helps your ads win auctions more efficiently.
Exclude poor placements
Review placement reports and block apps and sites with suspicious traffic, accidental clicks or brand-safety issues.
Measure beyond clicks
For awareness, track reach, video views, brand searches and assisted conversions, not just CTR, to judge what the CPM bought.

Ask a specialistHow do you calculate CPM?
Divide the total cost by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. For example, $2,000 for 250,000 impressions is $2,000 ÷ 250,000 × 1,000 = an $8.00 CPM.
What does CPM stand for?
CPM means cost per mille, from the Latin word for thousand. It is the price an advertiser pays for 1,000 impressions of an ad.
What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?
CPM is usually the rate an advertiser pays. eCPM (effective CPM) uses the same formula but applies it after the fact, often by publishers, to compare earnings across ads sold on different models: earnings ÷ impressions × 1,000.
What is a good CPM?
CPMs vary widely by platform, placement, audience, location and season, and premium audiences cost more. A good CPM is one that delivers viewable impressions to the right people at a cost that fits your goals. Compare against your own past campaigns.
Is CPM or CPC better?
CPM suits awareness and reach, and can be cheaper per click when your CTR is high. CPC is safer when you only value clicks. Enter your clicks and a CPC offer in the calculator to see which is cheaper for your campaign.
