Key takeaways
- Finance is YMYL, so Google weighs trust heavily. Named, credentialed authors and visible registrations aren't optional.
- SEBI, ICAI, RBI, the FCA and the SEC all limit what you can claim online.
- For US advisors, SEO cost $0.45 per dollar of new client revenue in the 2026 Kitces study, far cheaper than social media at $4.88.
- People already ask AI tools about money: 66% of US GenAI users told Credit Karma they use it for financial advice (2025).
A CA firm in Jaipur asked us why a two-person practice across the road outranked them for "GST registration consultant in Jaipur". The answer wasn't backlinks. The smaller firm had a clear service page for each filing type, a Google Business Profile with steady reviews, and a partner's name and ICAI membership number on every article. The bigger firm's homepage said "Leading CA Firm", which ICAI's website guidelines advise against.
That's financial services SEO in one story: trust signals do the work links do elsewhere, and the rules on what you may say are unusually strict. This guide covers advisors, CA firms, fintechs and lenders across India, the UK, the US and the Gulf.
Short answer: Financial services SEO means showing Google and AI tools that real, registered experts stand behind your content. Build service and location pages, add credentialed authors and registration numbers, publish useful calculators and rate pages, keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings strong, and run every page past compliance before it goes live.
Why does financial services SEO work differently?
Google says it plainly in its guidance on helpful content:
"Our systems give even more weight to content that aligns with strong E-E-A-T for topics that could significantly impact the health, financial stability, or safety of people."Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content
These are Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics. An anonymous "best tax-saving options" article rarely ranks, however well written.
Nobody picks a wealth manager or takes a ₹20 lakh business loan after one search. They compare, ask friends, check registrations and come back several times, so your SEO has to support slow, sceptical research.
Aggregators like Paisabazaar, BankBazaar, NerdWallet and MoneySuperMarket own the broad product queries. Smaller firms win by going local, niche or tool-led.
What compliance rules affect SEO for financial firms?
Most regulators treat your web pages as advertising. The table covers the markets we work in most; it isn't exhaustive.
| Market and firm type | Rule | What it means for your website |
|---|---|---|
| India: investment advisers and research analysts | SEBI Advertisement Code (April 2023) | Covers "any other form over the internet". No assured returns, no past performance, no SEBI logo; standard risk warning and registration details required. Prior approval from a body such as BASL for IAs. |
| India: chartered accountants | ICAI website guidelines (October 2020) | No client names or logos, no "best" or "leading" claims, no testimonials with client names, no fees or "free" services, no awards. Informational content is fine. |
| India: digital lenders | RBI Digital Lending Directions, 2025 | Key Fact Statement and APR disclosure before disbursal. RBI keeps a public directory of lending apps, so be accurate about who actually lends. |
| UK: all authorised firms | FCA financial promotions rules and FG24/1 | Promotions must be "fair, clear and not misleading" in any medium, including blog posts and social clips. |
| US: registered investment advisers | SEC Marketing Rule (compliance from November 2022) | Testimonials, endorsements and third-party ratings are allowed with required disclosures and oversight. |
This is a planning summary, not legal advice. Build a compliance review into your content workflow and keep dated copies of what you publish.
Which finance SEO trends matter heading into 2027?
People ask AI about money, then double-check. An Intuit Credit Karma survey of 1,019 US adults in August 2025 shows how far this has gone.

That validation step is your opening. People check AI answers on Google, and they trust pages with a named expert and a registration number.
Zero-click definitions. Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result (December 2025 data). Definitions suffer most; "SIP calculator" and "CA for startup compliance in Pune" far less.
Reviews, short advisor videos and conversational queries ("which bank gives the best FD rate for senior citizens?") round out the picture, each within what your regulator allows.
How do you choose keywords for financial advisor and fintech SEO?
Split your list into three buckets: local service queries, tool and rate queries, and research questions. The first two bring leads; the third builds authority and feeds AI answers. This is roughly the map we start from with a CA or advisory client:
| Keyword / query type | Search intent | Page to build | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| "chartered accountant in {city}", "CA firm near me" | Local, ready to hire | City or area page + Google Business Profile | High |
| "GST registration consultant in {city}" | Specific service | One service page per filing type | High |
| "fee-only financial advisor near me", "financial planner in {city}" | Local, high value | Location page with credentials and process | High |
| "financial planner for NRIs", "financial advisor for doctors" | Niche, high fit | Audience landing page | High |
| "EMI calculator", "SIP calculator", "income tax calculator" | Tool use | Free calculator with explainer | High |
| "personal loan interest rates", "FD rates for senior citizens" | Comparison | Rate page with "last updated" date | High |
| "{app name} safe or not", "{brand} reviews" | Validation | Trust page: licences, security, grievance contact | Medium |
| "business loan for MSME without collateral" | Commercial | Product page with eligibility and KFS link | Medium |
| "how to file ITR as a freelancer", "ISA vs pension" | Informational | Expert-reviewed guide | Medium |
Watch the boundary on research questions. An unregistered blog naming specific funds as recommendations is taking a regulatory risk for a click.
What site structure and schema should a financial website use?
Keep it predictable: a page per service, location, and audience, plus tools and resources. A Pune advisory with offices in Baner and Koregaon Park needs two location pages with real addresses and team photos, not twenty "financial advisor in {suburb}" clones.
Trust pages carry unusual weight in finance. Honestly, most advisor sites we audit bury the registration number in a footer PDF. Build these and link them from the footer:
- About and team pages with qualifications (CFP, CFA, CA, SEBI RIA) and registration numbers
- Regulatory disclosures, fee structure where allowed, and grievance redressal contacts
- Editorial policy explaining who writes and reviews content
For schema, use Organization sitewide, plus the most specific LocalBusiness subtype for each office: FinancialService, AccountingService or BankOrCreditUnion. Give authors Person markup with hasCredential and memberOf, use areaServed and feesAndCommissionsSpecification on FinancialService where fees can be shown, and add FinancialProduct or LoanOrCredit on product pages, and FAQPage where it fits. None of it guarantees a rich result, but it removes ambiguity.
Check that rate tables and calculators render in the HTML; our WordPress development team builds calculators that index cleanly.
How should advisors and CA firms handle Google Business Profile and local SEO?
For advisors, accountants and branch-based lenders, the Map Pack is prime territory. Pick the most precise primary category (Google offers options such as Financial planner, Chartered accountant, Tax consultant and Mortgage broker), and add secondary categories only for services you actually offer.
Reviews are where compliance gets tricky. US advisors can use them under the SEC Marketing Rule's disclosure conditions; Indian CA firms shouldn't show named client testimonials on their sites. Almost every CA asks us on the first call, "Can we just put our GST filing price on the site?" Under ICAI's guidance, no. So the page answers everything around price: documents, timelines, what's included. Our post on Google Business Profile benchmarks shows what a competitive profile looks like.
Directories matter more in finance than most sectors. In the 2026 Kitces marketing study, online advisor directories had the lowest acquisition cost of any tactic tracked.
What US advisors pay to win $1 of new client revenue
Revenue acquisition cost by marketing tactic. Shorter bars are cheaper. Social media ($4.88) is left off so the low-cost bars stay readable.
Blogging costing more than SEO isn't a contradiction. A blog with no search strategy behind it is just writing.
A two-adviser fee-only practice in Bengaluru gets 1,500 views a month, 40 website clicks and 12 calls. If a quarter of those calls become discovery meetings and one in three meetings turns into a client paying ₹60,000 a year, that's about one new client a month, or roughly ₹7 lakh in annual fees from a free listing. Switching the primary category from Financial consultant to Financial planner is often the cheapest improvement there.
In the US, look at NAPFA and XY Planning Network. In India, Justdial and Sulekha drive calls for accountants, while fintechs depend on app stores and aggregators.
What content strategy builds E-E-A-T for finance brands?
Build clusters around the decisions clients face (retirement, tax filing, home loans, business compliance), each with a pillar page, a calculator and links to the matching service.
Every article needs a named, credentialed author, a "reviewed by" line, an updated date and links to primary sources such as the Income Tax Department, HMRC or the IRS. Our explainer on E-E-A-T and YMYL covers the signals in detail.
How often should financial content be updated?
Whenever the facts change. Keep an update calendar tied to Budget day, policy rate announcements and the start of each tax year. A stale "income tax slabs" page is a trust problem, not just a ranking one.
Use AI for outlines if you like, but have a qualified person rewrite and sign off every article. Their judgement is what separates your page from the AI Overview above it.
Which link building and digital PR ideas work for financial services?
Finance journalists need data and quotable experts every week, and they're short of both on Budget day. Offer a partner's commentary to business desks a few days before the Union Budget, an RBI policy decision or the US tax deadline, and you'll often get the quote and the link. Anonymised data from your own client base or app (average SIP size by city, loan demand by industry) travels further still.
Calculators earn links for years, and literacy sessions with colleges and chambers of commerce produce local links that are hard to fake.
Skip paid links on low-quality "finance" blogs. A targeted link building programme built on PR and tools lasts longer.
How can financial firms show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
AI tools tend to recommend brands they can verify across several sources:
- Clear, quotable facts on your site: who you serve, where, your registrations, fee model and minimums.
- Consistent details across your Google Business Profile, directories, app stores, LinkedIn and regulator listings.
- Mentions in respected media and comparison sites, not just your own blog.
- A monthly check of prompts like "best fee-only advisor in Bengaluru" across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode.
Our AI search playbook covers the mechanics, and our GEO service handles prompt tracking for regulated brands.
Which KPIs should financial firms track from SEO?
| Business type | Primary conversions | Supporting metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Advisors and wealth managers | Discovery calls booked, qualified by assets or income | Map Pack views, calls from GBP, directory leads |
| CA and accounting firms | Enquiries by service (GST, audit, ITR) | Rankings for service + city terms, direction requests |
| Fintech apps | Installs and completed KYC from organic | Branded search volume, trust page visits |
In Search Console, open Performance > Search results and filter by page (for example, URLs containing /gst-) to see how each service cluster is doing. Track enquiries as GA4 key events and pass the source into your CRM so you can report cost per qualified client, not cost per click. Add "How did you hear about us?" to forms to catch AI referrals.
What are the most common financial services SEO mistakes?
- Anonymous contentArticles by "Admin" on retirement planning won't rank in a YMYL niche.
- Return promises and superlatives"Guaranteed 12% returns" or "Best CA in Delhi" can breach SEBI or ICAI rules and erodes trust.
- Stale rates and tax figuresOut-of-date numbers damage credibility fast.
- Doorway location pagesDozens of near-identical city pages for places you don't serve.
- No compliance stepPublishing first and asking compliance later.
What does a 90-day financial services SEO roadmap look like?
For a mid-sized advisory or CA firm with one to three offices, we'd sequence it like this. Fintechs can swap the location work for app store and aggregator listings.
- Compliance review of existing pages
- Author bios with credentials and registration numbers
- GBP clean-up and categories
- GA4 key events and CRM source tracking
- Service pages per offering
- Location and audience pages
- One flagship calculator
- FinancialService and Person schema
- Directory profiles
- First expert-reviewed cluster
- Media commentary pitch list
- Baseline AI prompt checks
- Budget and rate-day content calendar
- Quarterly data PR
- Review programme within the rules
- Monthly AI visibility tracking
