Key takeaways
- Home services SEO is won in the map pack, Local Services Ads and AI answers that summarise your reviews.
- Split keywords into emergency, planned-project and research intent. Each needs its own page and conversion path.
- Service area businesses must hide their address and can list up to 20 service areas.
- Review recency matters as much as rating: 74% of consumers only consider reviews from the last three months (BrightLocal, 2026).
- Track booked jobs, not rankings.
It is 11:40 on a Sunday night and water is coming through a kitchen ceiling in Pune. The homeowner types "plumber near me open now" and calls the first business that looks trustworthy and answers. The same scene plays out in Dallas, Manchester and Dubai. Nobody reads your About page at that moment. They glance at stars, review count, recency and opening hours.
That's why home services SEO looks so different from SEO for a software company. The window is short, the competition sits inside a map, and Google puts lead ads, AI summaries and directories above the blue links. What follows is how plumbers, HVAC firms, electricians and cleaners should respond heading into 2027.
Short answer: To do SEO for home services, build one page per service and per real service area, run a fully completed Google Business Profile set up as a service area business, earn a steady stream of recent reviews, add Plumber, Electrician or HVACBusiness schema, and measure booked jobs from calls and forms rather than rankings alone.
Why is home services SEO different from other local SEO?
Urgency is the obvious one. A dead air conditioner in a Delhi NCR summer is a same-hour decision, while a bathroom re-pipe might take three weeks of comparing quotes, and one website has to serve both.
Then there's the address problem. Most trade businesses run from a home office or a yard nobody visits, and Google's rule is blunt: if you don't receive customers there, you must hide your address. That changes how proximity works for you.
Trust sits underneath all of it. You're asking a stranger to let someone into their home, so licences, insurance and reviews weigh more here than in most local categories. Add Urban Company and Justdial in India, Angi and Thumbtack in the US, Checkatrade in the UK and hipages in Australia, and one results page holds several layers of competition. What's changing in home services search heading into 2027?
AI Overviews hit research queries, not emergencies
WebFX analysed 237,990 home services queries in July 2025 and found AI Overviews on 17.7% of them. "Why is my water heater popping" gets an AI answer far more often than "emergency electrician Jaipur." Money keywords are still a map-pack fight; how-to content is where clicks get absorbed.
How often AI Overviews appear on home services searches, by intent
Informational searches trigger AI Overviews nearly three times as often as transactional ones.

AI Mode and AI calling
Google's AI Mode reached more than 200 countries and territories in October 2025, India included. In the US, Google's AI can now phone local businesses to check pricing and availability for the searcher. Pet groomers were the launch example, but trades should take note.
Local Services Ads went "verified first"
On October 20, 2025, Google replaced the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges with a single Google Verified badge. Licences, insurance and background checks now decide whether you show at all.
Reviews got more demanding
In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 47% of US consumers won't use a business with under 20 reviews.
Share of consumers who require a minimum star rating
The bar for "good enough" rose sharply between the 2025 and 2026 surveys.
Which keywords should plumbers, HVAC firms and electricians target?
Sort every keyword into three buckets. Emergency queries ("24 hour plumber") convert by phone within minutes. Planned-project queries ("AC installation cost Bengaluru") convert through forms over days. Research queries ("how often should I service my boiler") rarely convert directly but feed brand searches and AI citations.
These patterns repeat in almost every market we audit. Volumes vary hugely by city, so pull yours from Keyword Planner or Search Console.
| Keyword / query type | Search intent | Page to build | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber near me | Emergency, call now | Emergency plumbing page with click-to-call above the fold | High |
| plumber in {city} / {suburb} | Local, ready to hire | Service-area page with local jobs and reviews | High |
| AC repair {city} | Urgent, seasonal | AC repair service page | High |
| furnace / boiler not working | Urgent, problem-aware | Symptom page linking to repair service | High |
| electrician for {job} (EV charger, panel upgrade) | Planned project | Dedicated job page with process and pricing range | High |
| {service} cost in {city} | Commercial research | Cost guide with real price ranges | Medium |
| deep cleaning services {city} | Planned, comparing | Cleaning package page with checklist and booking | Medium |
| best HVAC company in {city} | Comparing providers | Homepage and reviews page; earn list mentions | Medium |
| repair or replace {appliance} | Research | Blog guide with decision table | Low |
How should a home services website be structured?
One service, one page. A plumber needs separate pages for drain cleaning, water heater repair, leak detection and re-piping, not one "Services" page with six bullets. Each page should describe the problem in the customer's words, explain the fix, give a price range and carry a tracked phone number.
Location pages are where most trade sites go wrong. Google's spam policies list "multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as doorway abuse. Forty pages that swap "Gurugram" for "Noida" qualify. Build an area page only when you can fill it with real jobs, local reviews and response times.
Which schema types should a plumber or HVAC company use?
Schema.org has specific types under HomeAndConstructionBusiness: Plumber, Electrician, HVACBusiness, HousePainter, Locksmith, RoofingContractor, MovingCompany and GeneralContractor. Use the most specific one with areaServed and telephone, plus Service markup on service pages. Schema won't rank a thin site, but it helps machines connect you to the right trade and area. Most of these searches happen on a phone, so our mobile SEO checks start with the call button.
How do you optimize Google Business Profile as a service area business?
For most trades, the Business Profile drives more calls than the website. Follow Google's service-area rules exactly:
- Hide your address if customers don't visit you. List up to 20 service areas, within about two hours' drive of your base.
- Pick the most specific primary category (Plumber, Electrician, HVAC contractor, House cleaning service). Add secondary categories only for work you do.
- Use your real business name. "Best 24/7 Plumber Pune" breaks Google's naming guidelines.
- List every job type under Services, show emergency hours accurately and upload real job photos regularly.
- Never add a second profile at a virtual office. Google can suspend accounts for duplicate profiles in one metro area.
How do you get more Google reviews as a contractor?
Ask every customer by SMS with a direct link the moment the job is done, and have technicians mention it in person. Reply to every review; 89% of consumers expect owners to respond. In most mid-size cities we work in, the top three plumbers often carry a couple of hundred reviews each, so a 40-review profile has catching up to do. Don't gate or buy reviews. The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and sentiment-conditioned incentives in the US, and Google removes them everywhere.
Are Local Services Ads worth it for home services?
Local Services Ads charge when a customer contacts you, not per click, and sit above the map pack. Where they're offered for your country and category, test them alongside SEO, dispute junk leads and answer fast. Where they aren't, Google Ads call campaigns fill the gap.
Should you list on Urban Company, Justdial, Angi or Checkatrade?
Usually yes, but it's rented visibility. Marketplaces often outrank you for "{trade} in {city}" and charge per lead or commission. Keep your details identical everywhere, collect reviews on Google first, and use platforms to fill quiet weeks. For the full routine, see our local SEO checklist or our local SEO service.
What content builds E-E-A-T for tradespeople?
The content that works is what only someone who has done the job could write. In practice that means a few kinds of page:
- Cost and decision content: "Water heater replacement cost in Bengaluru," "repair or replace a 12-year-old AC." Competitors avoid honest price ranges, which is why these pages rank and get cited.
- Symptom content: "Breaker keeps tripping." Answer it, then say when it becomes a job for a licensed pro.
- Proof content: project pages with before-and-after photos and the customer's review.
Put a named person on it: "Reviewed by Rakesh, licensed electrician, 14 years" beats an anonymous blog. Show licences, insurance and trade memberships. Our explainer on what E-E-A-T is covers how Google's raters judge this.
Which link building ideas work for local contractors?
You need a few dozen relevant, local links, not hundreds. Honestly, the best ones usually come from relationships you already have:
- Manufacturer listingsMany equipment brands run installer locators. If you're authorised, ask for a listing with a link.
- Trade associationsMember directories from plumbing, HVAC and electrical bodies are relevant and hard for spammers to get.
- Seasonal local PRPitch "how to prepare your AC before the Delhi heatwave" or "five checks before winter in Leeds." Editors want practical stories every season.
- Community sponsorshipYouth sports teams, housing society events and charity repair days earn local links and goodwill.
Skip paid guest posts on unrelated sites; our link building team focuses on relevance over volume.
How do you get a home services business recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
AI tools reward clarity and consensus. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers said they use ChatGPT or other AI tools to read about local businesses, up from 6% the year before.
Where US consumers read reviews of local businesses (2026)
AI tools now sit ahead of Apple Maps and behind only Google and Facebook.
Keep your details identical across Google, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and marketplaces, answer "how much" and "do you cover {area}" in plain sentences, and earn mentions in local "best of" lists. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity "best emergency plumber in {your city}" monthly and note who gets named. Our playbook on how to rank in AI search goes further, and our AI search optimization service tracks it for you.
Which KPIs should a home services business track?
Rankings mean nothing if the phone doesn't ring. Take an illustrative AC repair company in Jaipur: 40 GBP calls a month, 25 answered, 12 booked, average job ₹3,500. That's ₹42,000 of work, and the fastest fix isn't SEO at all. Answering the other 15 calls is. Track the whole chain:
| KPI | Where to measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from GBP and website | GBP Performance tab, call tracking | Main conversion for emergency work |
| Form and booking submissions | GA4 key events | Main conversion for planned projects |
| Booked jobs and revenue by source | Your CRM or job software | Separates real leads from spam |
| Map-pack visibility by suburb | Grid rank tracker; Search Console › Performance › Search results, filtered by city queries | Shows where you're invisible |
| Review count, rating and recency | GBP and LSA dashboards | Drives clicks and AI summaries |
| Cost per booked job (SEO vs LSA vs Ads) | CRM plus ad platforms | Shows where the next rupee or dollar goes |
What are the most common home services SEO mistakes?
Using a virtual office or a relative's address to get a pin in a second city. It works until a competitor reports it, then the profile is suspended and your reviews go with it.
- Fifty near-identical city pages that Google treats as doorways.
- One generic "Services" page instead of a page per job type.
- Missed calls. No ranking fixes an unanswered phone at 9pm.
- Hiding prices. Even a range gives customers and AI tools something to quote.
What does a 90-day home services SEO roadmap look like?
This is the order we'd work in for a trade business with one base and a defined service area.
- Clean up GBP: categories, services, hidden address, service areas
- Set up call tracking and GA4 key events
- Audit NAP across directories and marketplaces
- Start an SMS review request after every job
- One page per core service with prices or price factors
- Emergency page with click-to-call
- 3–5 service-area pages with real local proof
- Trade-specific schema and FAQ markup
- Two cost guides and two symptom guides
- Manufacturer, association and local links
- Test Local Services Ads where available
- First AI visibility check in ChatGPT and Perplexity
- Weekly GBP photos and posts
- Monthly project pages
- Seasonal content ahead of each peak
- Quarterly review of cost per booked job

What to do this week
- Search your top three services plus "near me" from a phone in three parts of your area. Note who shows in the map pack, LSA and AI Overview.
- Send a review request to every customer from the past 30 days.
- Call your own number after hours. Unmonitored voicemail gets fixed first.
- Write down price ranges for your five most common jobs. That's your first cost guide.
