Key takeaways
- In Scorpion's 2025 survey, 75% of legal consumers checked a firm online before calling, even after a referral.
- Build one strong page per practice area, per city where you actually practise, plus a real bio page for every attorney.
- Legal queries triggered AI Overviews more than any other YMYL topic in SE Ranking's 2024 study (77.7% of keywords).
- Your Google Business Profile, review count and callback speed decide a large share of signed cases.
- Every tactic must pass your regulator first: ABA Model Rules in the US, SRA rules in England and Wales, Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India.
A family lawyer in Pune gets a warm referral from a former client. The prospect thanks the friend, then opens Google, types the firm's name and sees a 3.8-star profile with four reviews, the newest from 2023. Two searches later she is booking a call with a firm across town. That is how weak law firm SEO quietly loses the best leads: not by missing "divorce lawyer" rankings, but by failing the check after the referral.
Short answer: SEO for law firms means building a dedicated page for each practice area and city you serve, a verified Google Business Profile with a steady flow of genuine client reviews, attorney bio pages that prove expertise, LegalService schema, and links from legal directories and local press, all within your bar's advertising rules. Measure signed cases, not traffic.
Why is SEO for lawyers different from other industries?
Legal is different. For a start, it's a YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) category: a bad answer about custody, bail or immigration status can wreck someone's life, so Google holds legal pages to a higher standard of expertise and trust. See our E-E-A-T explainer; the same bar applies in healthcare SEO and financial services SEO.
The buyer is also usually stressed and in a hurry. Scorpion's 2025 Legal Consumer Insights Report (3,000 respondents) found 42% decide on a lawyer in under four days and 72% move on if they don't get a callback within 24 hours. SEO that ranks but feeds a voicemail box is wasted money.
And then there's regulation, which shapes what you can publish:
- United States: ABA Model Rule 7.2 bars implying certified-specialist status unless an approved body certified you and you name it, and bars paying for recommendations beyond narrow exceptions. State versions vary.
- England and Wales: the SRA's Transparency Rules require published prices for services such as residential conveyancing, uncontested probate and immigration (excluding asylum). The SRA clickable logo has been mandatory since November 2019.
- India: Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules prohibits advertising and solicitation. The amended rule lets advocates publish names, contact details, enrolment details, qualifications and areas of practice on a website. Anything resembling a pitch is risky.

What's changing in legal search heading into 2027?
AI Overviews answer the first legal question
When SE Ranking tested 300 keywords in each of four YMYL niches in September 2024, legal queries triggered AI Overviews far more often than health, finance or politics. Questions like "how long does probate take" now get an AI summary before any blue link. Google's AI Mode also passed one billion monthly users, according to Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings remarks.

ChatGPT recommendations and review recency
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45% in a year. The same survey found 74% of consumers want reviews from the last three months. For a law firm, a burst of reviews in 2022 and silence since then reads as a firm in decline, to people and to AI models alike.
Video matters too: 52% of Scorpion's respondents look for videos explaining services. A two-minute "what happens at your first bail hearing" clip beats another 800-word post. Voice search rewards the same clear, question-led answers.
Which keywords should a law firm target?
Map keywords to practice areas first, then to places, then to the questions clients ask before they hire. Generic head terms like "lawyer" are expensive and vague. "Cheque bounce lawyer in Jaipur" or "DUI attorney in Austin" is where signed cases come from.
Mine your intake notes and call recordings: the way a client describes the problem on the phone tells you how they search.
| Keyword / query type | Search intent | Page to build | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| divorce lawyer in {city} | Local, ready to hire | Family law practice page + city page | High |
| personal injury lawyer near me | Local, urgent | Google Business Profile + PI practice page | High |
| criminal defence lawyer {city} / bail lawyer in Delhi | Urgent, often after hours | Criminal practice page with 24/7 contact | High |
| employment lawyer free consultation | Transactional | Consultation booking page | High |
| how much does a divorce cost in {state} | Research, price-sensitive | Fees guide (UK: SRA price page) | High |
| property dispute lawyer Jaipur | Local, ready to hire | Property litigation page + city page | High |
| what to do after a car accident | Informational | Guide inside the PI cluster | Medium |
| how to contest a will UK | Informational, pre-hire | Probate cluster article | Medium |
| best immigration lawyer Dubai | Commercial comparison | Practice page with reviews and credentials | Medium |
| {attorney name} / {firm name} reviews | Navigational, vetting | Attorney bio + reviews page | Medium |
| what is Section 138 cheque bounce notice | Informational (India) | Explainer linked to practice page | Low |
How should a law firm website be structured?
Think in three layers: practice areas, locations and people. A clean structure looks like /practice-areas/family-law/, child pages for /family-law/child-custody/, and city pages only where you have an office or regularly appear in that court.
- Practice-area pages: one per service you want cases for. Cover who it is for, the process, timelines, fees and who handles it.
- Location pages: real addresses, local courts and the lawyers based there, never 40 near-identical pages with the city swapped.
- Attorney bios: bar admissions, enrolment number (India), education, publications, notable experience within ethics limits, and a photo. These are your E-E-A-T backbone.
For structured data, mark the firm up as LegalService, a subtype of LocalBusiness. Schema.org now marks the older Attorney type as deprecated, so use LegalService for the firm and Person for each lawyer, with properties like alumniOf, memberOf and knowsAbout. FAQ markup still helps machines parse answers, even though Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023.
If you are rebuilding, a well-configured WordPress site handles all of this.
How do lawyers rank for "lawyer near me" and in Google Maps?
For most firms, the map pack is the main event. Start with your Google Business Profile: choose the most specific primary category (Divorce lawyer, Personal injury attorney, Criminal justice attorney) rather than plain "Lawyer", then add secondary categories for other practice areas. Add services, hours, appointment links and real office photos.
Google's guidelines for individual practitioners allow a public-facing lawyer to have a separate profile at the firm's verified location. A solo lawyer under a firm brand should keep one profile named "[Firm]: [Lawyer name]". Never stuff "Best Divorce Lawyer Delhi" into the name field; it risks suspension.
How should a law firm get more Google reviews?
Ask every satisfied client, at the moment the matter closes, with a direct review link by email or WhatsApp. Google's fake engagement policy bans incentives and selectively asking only happy clients, and the US FTC's rule on fake reviews took effect in October 2024. Respond to every review without confirming that the reviewer was a client, which can breach confidentiality.
Beyond Google, claim profiles on Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Martindale-Hubbell in the US, Yelp where it carries weight locally, and Justdial in India. In the US, UK and several European markets, Google Local Services Ads with the Google Screened badge sit above the map pack for many legal categories and are worth testing alongside organic work. Our local SEO checklist covers citations and NAP consistency step by step.
What content builds E-E-A-T for attorneys?
Build topic clusters around each practice area. A child custody cluster might include a pillar page, then guides on custody types, how courts weigh the child's preference, relocation disputes and a jurisdiction-specific FAQ. Each guide links to the practice page; the practice page links back.
Trustworthy legal content is boring and specific: the lawyer's name and bar admission, a "reviewed on" date, citations to statutes and court rules, and a note that it is general information, not advice. In Bengaluru that means citing the actual section of the Hindu Marriage Act. In Manchester, the relevant Civil Procedure Rule.
Skip generic "10 reasons to hire a lawyer" posts. Case results (where your regulator allows them) and anonymised "how we handled this" explainers carry far more weight; Scorpion found 43% of legal consumers value case studies or success stories.
Publishing AI-drafted legal articles without attorney review. Errors on limitation periods or filing deadlines are an ethics problem, not just an SEO one. Have the responsible lawyer sign off and name them on the page.
Link building and digital PR ideas for law firms
Legal is competitive for links, so earn them where lawyers naturally have authority:
- Comment on local news: a new traffic law, a landmark High Court ruling, a tenancy rule change.
- Publish original data from your own work, such as average time to settle a motor accident claim in your state, anonymised and checked for confidentiality.
- Bar association, alumni and chamber of commerce profiles.
- Free legal clinics and CLE talks, which earn event and university links.
Avoid paid link schemes; some also raise Model Rule 7.2 questions. Our link building team focuses on editorial placements for exactly this reason.
How do law firms show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO. In practice, the firms we see cited answer one question per section in plain language, name the jurisdiction, keep facts consistent across site, profile and directories, and get mentioned on sites AI models trust.
SE Ranking found legal AI Overviews lean heavily on government sources (state court sites, USCIS, the Department of Labor) and legal references such as FindLaw and Cornell's Legal Information Institute. You will not outrank a court website on "how to file for divorce", but you can be the firm cited for "what to expect at a custody hearing in Cook County". For a wider playbook, read how to rank in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, or see our AI search optimization (GEO) service.
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini "who is the best {practice area} lawyer in {city}" and log which firms appear and which sources they cite. Those sources are your PR target list.
Which KPIs should a law firm track?
Traffic is a vanity metric for most firms. Track the chain from search to signed case:
That 25% "unsure" figure is the real problem. Add call tracking, tag form fills by practice area in GA4, and push lead source into your case management system (Clio, MyCase or a CRM) so you can report cost per signed case by channel. Also track map pack rank grids, review velocity, median callback time and AI citations.
What are the most common law firm SEO mistakes?
- One "Practice Areas" page listing everything instead of a page per service.
- Calling lawyers "specialists" or "experts" where the rules forbid it.
- Doorway city pages for towns you never visit.
- Keyword-stuffed Google Business Profile names, which risk suspension.
- No price information in England and Wales for services the SRA requires.
- Great rankings feeding an intake process that takes two days to call back.
