Key takeaways
- Google still handles about nine in ten searches worldwide, and AI Mode passed one billion monthly users in 2026. Search is changing shape, not dying.
- Clicks are the casualty. When an AI answer sits on top, the No. 1 organic result earned a 3.6% CTR versus 22.6% without one in First Page Sage's 2026 data.
- Being cited inside the AI answer helps: Seer found cited brands earned a 35% higher organic CTR than uncited ones on the same AI Overview queries.
- AI referrals are small (about 0.25% of the average site's traffic in mid-2025) but convert well.
- Local buyers move fast: 75% pick a business in under 30 minutes, and reviews still decide who makes the shortlist.
Picture a dental clinic in Pune whose rankings haven't moved all year, yet calls from the website have slowed. Open its Search Console and the pattern is familiar from the audits we run: impressions up, clicks down, because Google now answers "how long does a root canal take" before anyone reaches the page. That one chart is 2026 search in miniature.
This collection of SEO statistics is built to explain what is actually happening, with 120+ numbers from Google, Pew, Ahrefs, Semrush, BrightLocal, Adobe and others. We dropped anything we could not trace to a primary page. Where a figure is a forecast, we say so.
Each figure was checked on its source page in October 2026. The year shown is when the research was published, never 2027. Grid stats are not repeated in the bullets.
Key SEO statistics at a glance
Short answer: Google holds about 90% of global search share, but AI answers now cut clicks sharply. With an AI answer present, position one gets a 3.6% click-through rate versus 22.6% without one. Meanwhile ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users, and 97% of consumers read local reviews before choosing a business.

Search engine market share and search volume statistics
- Bing holds 5.29% of worldwide search (StatCounter, Sept 2026).
- In the US, Google's share is lower at 85.19% (StatCounter, Sept 2026).
- Bing takes 9.89% of US search, nearly double its global share (StatCounter, Sept 2026).
- Alphabet's Search & Other ad revenue reached $63.1 billion in Q4 2025, up 17% (Alphabet, 2026).
- Gartner forecast in 2024 that traditional search volume would fall 25% by 2026 as chatbots took share. Google's own reporting since then shows query growth, not decline (Gartner, 2024).
What this means for 2027: Google is still the channel. If you sell in the US or to B2B buyers on work laptops, verify Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Everyone predicting the death of search has had to explain record Google revenue.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode statistics
- AI Overviews reached 1.5 billion users by May 2025 (Google I/O, 2025).
- AI Overviews drive over 10% more queries for the query types that show them (Google, 2025).
- AI Mode had 100 million+ monthly users in the US and India by mid-2025 (Google, 2025).
- Daily AI Mode queries per US user doubled since launch (Alphabet Q4, 2026).
- AI Mode questions run nearly 3x longer than traditional searches (Google India, 2025).
- AI Overview prevalence climbed from 6.49% of keywords in January 2025 to a 24.61% peak in July (Semrush, 2025).
- Informational queries fell from 91.3% to 57.1% of AI Overview keywords during 2025 (Semrush, 2025).
- Transactional keywords rose from 1.98% to 13.94% of AI Overview triggers (Semrush, 2025).
- 60% of question-style searches produced an AI summary, versus 8% of one- or two-word searches (Pew Research, 2025).
- Only 37.9% of AI Overview citations now come from the top 10 organic results, down from about 76% in July 2025 (Ahrefs, 2026).
What this means for 2027: AI answers are spreading from "what is" questions into commercial and buying queries. And ranking top 10 no longer guarantees a citation. Our playbook for ranking in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews covers what to change on the page.
ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI search statistics
- About 70% of consumer ChatGPT use is non-work (OpenAI, 2025).
- Gemini has passed a quarter of worldwide generative AI web traffic (Similarweb, 2026).
- Generative AI platforms averaged 9.5 billion web visits a month, up 70% year on year (Similarweb, 2026).
- Roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses now contain an ad (Similarweb, 2026).
- 44% of US adults have used ChatGPT, up from 34% a year earlier (Pew Research, 2026).
- About four in ten US adults use chatbots to search for information (Pew Research, 2026).
- Perplexity handled 780 million queries in May 2025, growing 20%+ a month (TechCrunch, 2025).
- AI chatbots sent about 0.25% of the average website's traffic (Ahrefs, 2025).
- Google sent 210x more traffic than ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini combined (Ahrefs, 2025).
- ChatGPT generates more than 80% of all AI referral traffic (Ahrefs, 2025).
- The average AI search visitor is worth 4.4x a traditional organic visitor (Semrush, 2025).
- Semrush forecasts AI search visitors will overtake traditional search visitors in 2028, a projection rather than a measurement (Semrush, 2025).
What this means for 2027: AI search is big in users and small in clicks. Buyers research in ChatGPT, then search your brand on Google, so track branded search alongside AI referrals and treat AI search optimisation (GEO) as an extension of SEO, not a separate religion.
In GA4, open Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to "Session source", and filter for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot. Save it as an exploration. Ahrefs found some Copilot visits land as "Direct", so treat the number as a floor.
Zero-click search and click-through rate statistics
A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they need on the results page, or leaves, without clicking through to any website.
- In the EU, 59.7% of Google searches ended without a click (SparkToro, 2024).
- Only 360 of every 1,000 US Google searches send a click to the open web (SparkToro, 2024).
- About 30% of all clicks go to Google-owned properties such as YouTube and Maps (SparkToro, 2024).
- Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in just 1% of visits (Pew Research, 2025).
- 26% of searches with an AI summary ended the browsing session, versus 16% without (Pew Research, 2025).
- Brands cited in an AI Overview earned 35% higher organic CTR than uncited brands (Seer Interactive, 2025).
- Zero-click news searches rose from 56% to 69% in the year to May 2025 (Similarweb via SERoundtable, 2025).
- Google says it sends billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search (Alphabet, 2026).
"Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year."— Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search, Google blog, August 2025
What this means for 2027: Both can be true: Google's totals hold while your informational pages lose half their clicks. Report clicks, conversions and citation share, not rankings alone, and shift effort toward queries where someone still needs to call, book or buy.
Organic traffic and ranking statistics
- Blended across all SERPs, position 1 earns a 7.1% CTR (First Page Sage, 2026).
- Position 2 drops from 10.2% CTR without an AI answer to 1.4% with one (First Page Sage, 2026).
- Being the No. 1 source cited in an AI answer earns a 5.2% CTR (First Page Sage, 2026).
- The AI Overview CTR penalty ranged from 19.4% at position 10 to 50.8% at position 2 (Ahrefs, 2026).
- "People also ask" appeared in 24 of 26 subindustries studied (Conductor, 2024).
- Only 67.7% of desktop pages have a meta description (Web Almanac, 2025).
- 68% of desktop pages use a canonical tag (Web Almanac, 2025).
- Just 2.13% of desktop sites have a valid llms.txt file (Web Almanac, 2025).
What this means for 2027: A top ranking on an AI-heavy query is now worth roughly a sixth of the clicks it used to be. Basic hygiene gaps remain common too: a third of pages still skip meta descriptions. Our technical SEO audit checklist is a good first pass, and llms.txt can wait until the basics are done.
Content, AI content and backlink statistics
- The correlation between AI content share and ranking position was 0.011, effectively zero (Ahrefs, 2025).
- 74.2% of 900,000 new webpages contained AI-generated content (Ahrefs, 2025).
- 87% of 879 surveyed content marketers use AI to create content (Ahrefs, 2025).
- The average blog post is 1,312 words, down from 1,427 in 2023 (Orbit Media, 2026).
- Only 13.9% of bloggers say their blog delivers strong results, an all-time low (Orbit Media, 2026).
- Raw backlink count correlated at just 0.218 with AI Overview brand visibility (Ahrefs, 2025).
- 26% of 75,000 brands had zero AI Overview mentions (Ahrefs, 2025).
- 48.6% of SEOs rate digital PR the most effective link-building tactic (Editorial.Link, 2026).
- 73.2% believe backlinks influence the chance of appearing in AI search results (Editorial.Link, 2026).
What this means for 2027: Google doesn't care who typed the first draft. It cares whether the page is useful and whether anyone talks about you. Mentions beat link volume for AI visibility, so put link building budget into digital PR, original data and expert quotes, not bulk guest posts.
Local SEO statistics
- 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 68% will only use a business with four or more stars (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 74% look for reviews written in the last three months (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 89% expect business owners to respond to reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 40% trust AI platforms to recommend businesses (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 75% used more than one channel during their latest local search (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 31% use AI tools for local recommendations at least monthly, but only 8% choose AI as their first channel (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 72% consider three or fewer businesses before choosing (BrightLocal, 2026).
- Business websites supplied 42% of all citations in local AI answers (BrightLocal, 2026).
- Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of citations across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- The first local pack position earns a 14.8% CTR (First Page Sage, 2026).
What this means for 2027: A plumber in Leeds with 14 reviews from 2023 is invisible to almost half of buyers. Reviews, recency and replies are the cheapest local wins. Start with our 27-step local SEO checklist, and compare your profile against the Google Business Profile benchmarks.
Asking for reviews in one burst, then going quiet for a year. With 74% of buyers wanting reviews from the last three months, two or three a week beats fifty in March.
Mobile and page speed statistics
- Desktop accounts for 39.26% of global web traffic and tablets 1.76% (StatCounter, Sept 2026).
- 62% of mobile sites have good Largest Contentful Paint, versus 74% on desktop (Web Almanac, 2025).
- 77% of mobile sites have good Interaction to Next Paint, versus 97% on desktop (Web Almanac, 2025).
- Among the top 1,000 sites, good INP scores jumped from 53% to 63% (Web Almanac, 2025).
- An INP of 200 milliseconds or less counts as good responsiveness (web.dev, 2025).
- Mobile drove 66.5% of US online sales on Christmas Day 2025 (Adobe, 2026).
What this means for 2027: More than half of mobile sites still fail Core Web Vitals, and LCP is usually the culprit: oversized hero images and slow servers. Test on a mid-range Android over 4G, not your office Wi-Fi. If the site lags there, mobile SEO fixes come before new content.
E-commerce SEO statistics
- US online holiday spending hit $257.8 billion in 2025, up 6.8% (Adobe, 2026).
- Revenue per visit from AI traffic rose 254% year on year over the holidays (Adobe, 2026).
- AI-referred shoppers stayed 45% longer on site (Adobe, 2026).
- AI and agents influenced 20% of global holiday retail sales (Salesforce, 2026).
- Traffic from AI search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity doubled year on year (Salesforce, 2026).
- AI search traffic converted at 9x the rate of social media traffic (Salesforce, 2026).
What this means for 2027: Shopping assistants read your feed before your product page. A Shopify store in Melbourne with patchy Merchant Center attributes will lose to a competitor with clean GTINs and honest reviews. Our e-commerce SEO audits start with the feed for that reason.
India search and digital statistics
- DataReportal counts 1.03 billion internet users in India at the end of 2025, a 70.0% penetration rate (DataReportal, 2026).
- India had 1,094.48 million broadband subscribers at the end of July 2026 (TRAI, 2026).
- 548 million of India's active internet users live in rural areas (IAMAI-Kantar, 2026).
- 44% of Indian internet users engage with AI-enabled features (IAMAI-Kantar, 2026).
- India is Google's largest user base for both voice and visual search globally (Google India, 2025).
- AI Mode added seven more Indian languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi (Google India, 2025).
- Airtel gave all 360 million customers a free year of Perplexity Pro (Bharti Airtel, 2025).
- Google and Reliance Jio offered 500 million+ consumers an 18-month free Gemini trial (Alphabet Q4, 2026).
- Paid ChatGPT subscriptions in India more than doubled within a month of ChatGPT Go's launch (Social Samosa, 2025).
What this means for 2027: With telecoms bundling free AI subscriptions, India is the biggest test market for AI search. A coaching institute in Jaipur should publish in Hindi as well as English, mark up its Google Business Profile properly, and expect students to arrive via ChatGPT as often as via Google.
