Key takeaways
- Mentions outweigh link counts: 0.664 vs 0.218 correlation with AI Overview visibility (Ahrefs, 2025).
- Roundups are the battleground: "best of" lists were 43.8% of page types ChatGPT cited (Ahrefs, 2025).
- Shelf space is tiny: ChatGPT names about 3.3 brands per answer (Semrush, 2026).
- Use the Citation Gap Method: find cited URLs naming competitors but not you, and work them top-down.
- Stay clean: four Google spam updates in 2026; fake reviews are illegal in all four markets.
A prospect asks ChatGPT for "the best payroll provider for a 40-person company in Ontario." Four names come back. Your competitor is first, quoted from a roundup on a Canadian accounting blog. You aren't mentioned, even though you outrank that competitor on Google.
That isn't a ranking problem. It's a footprint problem, and it's why link building for AI search has become its own discipline heading into 2027. AI engines don't recommend the site with the most backlinks. They recommend the brand their sources keep naming.
The stakes rose this year. Google says AI Mode passed one billion monthly users in May 2026, a year after launch. And when an AI summary appears, people click a regular result about 8% of the time versus 15% without one, per Pew Research (SISTRIX). If you're not inside the answer, you're mostly out of the conversation.
Below is the playbook we use at Elite Information Tech, a digital growth agency founded in 2008 with 300+ specialists, including an audit you can run this week.
Short answer: Link building for AI search means earning brand mentions and links on the exact pages AI engines cite for your buyers' questions: "best of" roundups, review platforms, news, Reddit and YouTube. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility three times more strongly than backlinks (0.664 vs 0.218). Start by auditing which cited pages name competitors but not you.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
ChatGPT recommends your competitor because it's named on more of the pages the engine retrieves for your category. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Google's AI features fetch live web sources, then summarize what they agree on.
Google calls its version "query fan-out": several related searches stitched into one answer (Google Search Central). So the question isn't "how do I rank?" but "which pages does the robot read, and am I on them?"
The shelf is small. Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, built on 126 million US prompts, found ChatGPT cites about 15.4 sources per response but names only about 3.3 brands. AI Mode names about 5.2 (PPC Land's breakdown of the Semrush index). That's three to five slots per answer, and you're competing for them with every rival in your category.
AI engines don't rank websites. They repeat what the rest of the web says about brands.
What do AI engines actually cite in 2026?
AI engines mostly cite third-party pages: "best of" listicles, review platforms, news, Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia. Your own site gets cited too, but recommendations lean on what others say about you.
Brand mentions beat raw backlink counts
In Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated most strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664), ahead of branded anchors (0.527), Domain Rating (0.326) and plain backlinks (0.218). About 26% of brands had no AI Overview mentions at all.
A December 2025 Ahrefs follow-up found the same pattern in ChatGPT and AI Mode, with a twist: YouTube mentions correlated most strongly, around 0.737 (Ahrefs). Correlation isn't causation, but three platforms agreeing is enough to act on.
"Best of" lists do much of the work
Ahrefs' study of 26,283 source URLs cited by ChatGPT found blog-style "best of" lists made up 43.8% of cited page types. Freshness mattered: 79.1% of cited lists had been updated in 2025. In software, vendors' self-promotional lists still showed up in over a third of ChatGPT responses.
Platform favorites change month to month
Across 230,000+ prompts Semrush tracked in 2025, Reddit appeared in close to 60% of ChatGPT responses in early August and about 10% by mid-September. Anyone selling "guaranteed ChatGPT placement through Reddit" is selling weather.
Google rankings still feed Google's AI
BrightEdge found about 54.5% of AI Overview citations came from pages that also rank organically as of September 2025, up from 32.3% in May 2024 (about 75% in healthcare, only 23% in ecommerce). Google says there are "no additional requirements" for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Our rule: rankings earn eligibility, mentions decide who gets named.
Do backlinks still matter for AI search, or only brand mentions?
Both matter, but they do different jobs. Backlinks still drive Google rankings, which feed AI Overviews and AI Mode. Brand mentions in context decide whether a language model names you when it summarizes those pages.
GEO link building is the practice of earning links and brand mentions on the third-party pages generative AI engines cite for a buyer's question, measured by whether the brand appears in AI answers, not by backlink counts.
A UK trade site writing "for multi-site dental groups, Acme is the tool practice managers recommend" helps a language model whether or not "Acme" is hyperlinked. The sentence around your name is the payload.
Backlinks vs brand mentions vs linked mentions: what each does for Google and AI search
| Dimension | Backlink (classic) | Unlinked brand mention | Linked brand mention in context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helps Google rankings | Yes, the main measurable effect | Weak or indirect | Yes |
| Helps AI answers name you | Indirectly, through rankings | Yes, when the context is clear | Yes, the strongest combination |
| Best sources | Relevant editorial sites, resource pages | Reddit, forums, podcasts, YouTube, news | Roundups, reviews, digital PR coverage |
| Main risk | Link spam penalties | Negative framing you can't edit | Paid placements without disclosure |
In Editorial.Link's 2026 survey of 518 SEOs, 73.2% believe backlinks influence AI search appearance (Editorial.Link). Belief isn't evidence. Forty directory links a month can leave your AI visibility exactly where it was: no AI engine cites those pages.
How do you find your citation gap? The Citation Gap Method
You find it by running real buyer prompts across the major AI engines, logging every cited URL, and isolating the pages that mention competitors but not you. We call this the Citation Gap Method: five steps, about two days per market, ending in a ranked hit list.
Citation gap is the set of URLs AI engines cite for your buyers' prompts that mention competitors but not your brand. Citation Weight is the number of prompt-and-engine runs that cite a given URL. Source Share is the percentage of all cited URLs in your prompt set that mention you.
- Build a buyer prompt setWrite 40 to 60 prompts the way buyers ask before they know you: best-of ("best commercial cleaners in Melbourne"), alternatives ("alternatives to [competitor]"), problem-first and local ("most trusted family lawyer in Calgary"). Split by market.
- Run every prompt twice on six enginesUse ChatGPT with search, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot in clean, logged-out sessions. Run UK, Canadian and Australian prompts from those countries, where .co.uk, .ca and .com.au sources surface. One run is an anecdote.
- Log every cited URLOne row per prompt, engine and cited URL: brands named in order, whether and how you're named, page type, and whether the page mentions you.
- Score Citation Weight and isolate the gapFilter for cited URLs that name a competitor but not you, then count how many runs cite each. A roundup cited in 14 runs beats 14 pages cited once.
- Triage into four queuesPitch (pages you can earn a spot on), Review (platforms where you trail), Fix (pages that frame you badly, a product problem) and Ignore (stale or low-weight pages). Rerun monthly.
Sample citation gap tracking table
Here's an illustrative log for a payroll brand selling in four markets.
Illustrative citation gap log (A to E are competitors; one row per prompt, engine and cited URL)
| Prompt | Engine / market | Brands named, in order | Named? | Cited URL type | Page mentions us? | Citation Weight | Queue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| best payroll software for UK startups | Perplexity / UK | A, B, C | No | .co.uk accounting blog roundup | No | 14 | Pitch |
| best payroll software for UK startups | ChatGPT / UK | A, C, Us | Yes, #3 | Trustpilot category page | Yes | 9 | Review |
| payroll for 40-person company Ontario | ChatGPT / CA | A, B, C, E | No | Canadian accounting firm "best of" list | No | 11 | Pitch |
| easiest payroll tool for Australian cafes | Gemini / AU | B, Us | Yes, #2 | Comparison article on a .com.au business site | Yes, "slow support" | 5 | Fix |
Decision rules for the hit list
- If a URL has a Citation Weight of 5+ and was updated within 12 months, pitch it this month.
- If a list hasn't been updated in 18 months, skip it.
- If three or more cited pages frame you badly, fix the complaint before more outreach.
- If your Source Share is under 10% in a market, don't start with PR. Win reviews and roundups first.
Run the first audit by hand. Reading 50 AI answers teaches you more than any dashboard.
Which sources should you target first for AI citations?
Target the highest-weight cited sources you can realistically influence within a quarter. For most brands that means review platforms and cited roundups first, then digital PR.
Source priority matrix for GEO link building
| Source type | Effort | Typical time to show | Google link value | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Review platforms (G2, Trustpilot, etc.) | Low to medium | 1 to 3 months | Low | 1 |
| Cited "best of" roundups | Medium | Next list refresh | Medium to high | 1 |
| Data-led digital PR coverage | High | 2 to 4 months | High | 2 |
| Expert quotes in trade press | Medium | 1 to 3 months | Medium | 2 |
| Reddit and forums | Medium, ongoing | Unpredictable | Low (nofollow) | 3 |
| YouTube reviews and mentions | Medium to high | 2 to 6 months | Low | 2 |
| Generic guest posts and directories | Low | Rarely shows | Varies | Only for rankings |
Note the last row. Guest post placements on real publications still help Google rankings; they just aren't a shortcut into ChatGPT.
How do you get onto "best of" listicles ethically?
You earn a spot by giving the editor a better answer for a specific use case, offering hands-on access instead of payment, and pitching before the list's next refresh. Paying for undisclosed inclusion is a legal and Google risk.
The inclusion playbook
- Qualify the list. It appears in your audit, was updated within 12 months and explains its criteria. A list with no criteria and 40 entries is a link farm with a headline.
- Pick the use case you actually win. "Best for multi-location clinics in Canada" beats "best overall."
- Bring proof. A sourced review score and pricing in local currency (USD, GBP, CAD or AUD).
- Offer access, not money. A full account or sample they can test.
- Time it, follow up once. Pitch four to six weeks before the usual refresh.
Outreach template that gets replies
Subject: A pick for [specific audience] in your "[list title]"
Hi [First name],
Your "[list title]" is one of the few roundups that explains how tools were tested, which is probably why AI assistants keep citing it for [category].
One gap: there's no option for [specific use case, e.g. multi-location clinics in Ontario]. That's exactly what [Brand] was built for. [One sourced proof point, e.g. "4.7/5 from 300+ reviews on Capterra"].
Happy to set up a full account so you can test it before your next update. No payment, and no hard feelings if it doesn't earn a spot.

Don't pay for undisclosed placement on "independent" lists. The FTC, CMA and ASA, Competition Bureau and ACCC all treat hidden advertising as deceptive. Google's link spam policy requires paid links to carry rel="sponsored". Google has run four spam updates in 2026, the latest finishing on October 8 (Search Engine Journal).
It works today: in 67.6% of 250 "best software" Google results, Ahrefs found a list where the publisher ranked itself first. If you publish one, include real competitors, explain your criteria and disclose your stake.
Which review and listing platforms matter in the US, UK, Canada and Australia?
The platforms that matter are the ones AI engines cite in your category and market, so check your audit first. Broadly, G2 and Capterra dominate software, Trustpilot carries unusual weight in the UK, and trades lean on local directories.
Review and listing platforms that commonly appear in AI answers, by market
| Market | Software and B2B | Agencies and professional services | Local, trades and consumer | Regulator for fake reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USA | G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Gartner Peer Insights | Clutch, UpCity | Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Angi | FTC |
| UK | G2, Capterra, Trustpilot | Clutch, Trustpilot | Trustpilot, Google, Checkatrade, Feefo, Reviews.io | CMA (and ASA for ads) |
| Canada | G2, Capterra | Clutch | Google, HomeStars, Yelp, BBB | Competition Bureau |
| Australia | G2, Capterra | Clutch | ProductReview.com.au, Google, hipages | ACCC |
| New Zealand / Ireland | G2, Capterra | Clutch | Google, NoCowboys and Builderscrack (NZ), Trustpilot (IE) | Commerce Commission (NZ), CCPC (IE) |
The FTC's 2024 fake reviews rule bans bought reviews, undisclosed insider reviews and review suppression. The UK's DMCC Act banned fake reviews from 6 April 2025, with CMA fines up to 10% of worldwide turnover (Which?).
So the play is boring and legal: ask customers at the moment they're happy, make the link one tap away, and reply to negative reviews as if an AI will quote you. It might. For local businesses this overlaps with local SEO.
How does digital PR earn AI citations in 2027?
Digital PR earns AI citations by placing your brand, a specific claim and a number inside publications AI engines trust. One dataset, cut into country-specific stories, can earn dozens of linked mentions.
One study, four markets
Use a dataset you own, like anonymized customer data or a buyer survey, with one headline per market. Picture "Leeds tradespeople wait longest to get paid in Yorkshire" for UK regional press, plus Toronto and Brisbane angles. This is where earned link building services and digital PR become one job.
Expert quotes
HARO is back: Featured.com bought it from Cision in April 2025, and in May 2026 announced Connectively's relaunch as an AI PR co-pilot, with HARO staying separate (GlobeNewswire). They're flooded with AI-written pitches, so winning quotes say what a chatbot couldn't: your own numbers, a regional detail, a contrarian view. Keep the expert's name and title identical every time.
Reddit, YouTube and communities
Have one or two real team members join the subreddits and forums buyers use (Whirlpool in Australia, RedFlagDeals in Canada, Mumsnet in the UK), disclosing their employer. Mention your brand only when it's genuinely the best answer. Given the YouTube correlation, honest demo videos deserve a 2027 budget line.
The bigger Reddit win usually isn't posting. It's fixing what people complain about in cited threads.
How do you measure link building for AI search?
Measure it monthly with five numbers: AI share of voice, Source Share, AI impressions and referrals, branded search demand and link metrics. If that feels hard, you're not alone: in a 2026 Semrush survey of 481 marketers, 45% said they can't properly measure AI answer visibility (PPC Land).
Measurement plan for AI search visibility
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to get it | Cadence |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI share of voice | % of prompts naming you vs top 3 rivals | Prompt reruns or a tracking tool | Monthly |
| Source Share | Progress on the hit list | Your citation gap log | Monthly |
| AI referral traffic and conversions | Whether AI mentions send buyers | GA4 segment for AI referrers | Monthly |
| Google AI impressions | Pages shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by country | Search Console generative AI reports | Monthly |
| Copilot and Bing citations | Cited pages and grounding queries | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Monthly |
| Branded search demand | Whether AI exposure is reaching buyers | Search Console, Google Trends by country | Monthly |
| Referring domains and rankings | Google eligibility for AI features | Ahrefs, Semrush, Search Console | Monthly |
Both big search engines now report on this. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026, showing citations and "grounding queries" for Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (Search Engine Land). Google followed: since August 31, 2026, Search Console shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page and country for all sites, but no clicks yet (Search Engine Journal). Use the country split for separate US, UK, Canadian and Australian baselines. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, a GA4 custom channel group catches most AI referrals with this regex:
Session source matches regex:
.*(chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai|you\.com).*
Being cited also seems to protect clicks. Seer Interactive reported organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell 61% from June 2024 to September 2025, but brands cited in the Overview earned 35% higher organic CTR. Seer flags that as correlation, not proof.
What does a 90-day GEO link building plan look like?
A realistic first 90 days covers one audit, one round of review and listicle work and one PR story. Expect first movement by month two or three and real share-of-voice change in two quarters.
How to get cited by ChatGPT in 2027: a 90-day plan
| Phase | Work | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 3 | Citation Gap Method audit per market; consistent brand name and About page | Baseline share of voice, ranked hit list |
| Weeks 3 to 8 | Review program per country; pitches to the top 10 to 20 cited roundups; expert quotes | Review velocity, first list inclusions, first quotes |
| Weeks 6 to 12 | One data-led PR story with US, UK, Canadian and Australian angles; disclosed community participation | Linked coverage, first month-over-month comparison |
On budget: Editorial.Link's 2026 report put the average acceptable price for one high-quality link at about $508. At that rate, 20 placements on cited roundups and trade sites is about $10,000 before any PR. Our rule: if your gap is mostly reviews and roundups, start with one market; if it's mostly news coverage, fund one data story per quarter, not more links. To test before committing, try our small backlink packages.
What will change in AI search link building in 2027?
Our forecast: AI reporting becomes standard, self-serving lists lose value, and named brands pull further ahead. These are predictions, not data, grounded in 2025 and 2026 evidence.
- AI reporting becomes a client expectation. Bing reports citations and Google reports AI impressions. We expect click data next, and clients demanding share of voice, not link counts.
- Self-ranked "best of" lists get discounted. Two-thirds of "best software" results feature a self-ranked list. We expect engines to favor independent roundups over vendor-published ones.
- Winner-take-most gets worse. In News and Media, Semrush found the top three brands held 82.9% of mention volume. We expect leaders to pull further ahead unless challengers build now.
- Video becomes a link building line item. Given YouTube's 0.737 correlation in Ahrefs' 2025 data, we expect GEO budgets to fund creator reviews and demos alongside written placements.
What won't most agencies tell you about AI citations?
Mostly that nobody can guarantee a citation.
Sources shift month to month, as the Reddit swing from 60% to 10% shows. Some of your gap isn't a marketing problem: if cited pages say your support is slow, outreach won't fix that. And "GEO link building" is partly a rebrand of good digital PR; what's new is that mentions can now be measured.
Red flags when hiring an AI search visibility agency
- They quote before showing a prompt-level audit.
- They sell "AI citation packages" of Reddit posts or Quora answers.
- They guarantee positions in ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews.
- They won't name their sites, or they suggest buying reviews. Walk away.
Your AI visibility checklist
- 40 to 60 buyer-style prompts, split by market (US, UK, CA, AU)
- Baseline run across all six AI engines
- Every cited URL logged, weighted and sorted into Pitch, Review, Fix and Ignore
- Review program per country, plus outreach to the top 10 to 20 cited roundups
- One data-led PR story per quarter with country-specific angles
- GA4 AI referral channel, Search Console AI reports and Bing AI Performance report checked monthly
- Monthly report on share of voice, Source Share and AI referrals
